Robin Peterson

Robin Peterson Biography
Full name Robin Peterson
Born August 4, 1979, Port Elizabeth, Cape Province
Current age 31 years 169 days
Playing role Bowler
Batting style Left-hand bat
Bowling style Slow left-arm orthodox

Robin Peterson Profile

Spin bowlers of genuine potential are a rarity in South Africa, much less the jewels who can hold a bat as well as field with attacking intent. Peterson, a left-arm finger spinner from Eastern Province, fills all three vacancies more than competently. At first glance he seems an overly orthodox slow bowler, but he turns the ball appreciably given help from the pitch and is invariably a tidy operator with a steadily developing understanding of flight. Peterson has also cultivated an unusual delivery that turns into the right-handed batsmen. He was part of the South African Under-19 team that took on Pakistan and England, and he played the Under-19 World Cup in 1998. Peterson made his Test debut in 2003 against Bangladesh, taking five wickets and scored 61. It was in Bangladesh where he took his first five-wicket haul as well, on the 2008 tour.

Given more chances in ODIs, Peterson has failed to grab the opportunities. With his bowling hardly a threat to the opposition batsmen, it is not surprising that one of his ODI career highlights is his winning boundary - an outside edge past slip - in South Africa's one-wicket victory over Sri Lanka at Providence during the 2007 World Cup.

Abraham Benjamin de Villiers

Abraham Benjamin de Villiers Biography
Abraham Benjamin de Villiers (born 17 February 1984 in Pretoria) more commonly known by his initials AB plays cricket for South Africa and the Northern Titans. He also plays for the Delhi DareDevils in the Indian Premier League. De Villiers is a right-handed batsman, who, in a very short space of time, has accumulated many runs in Tests including centuries against England, India, the West Indies and Australia. He has been dismissed in the 90s on five occasions in Tests. He held the record for most Test innings without registering a duck (78), before being dismissed for nought against Bangladesh in November 2008. He made his test debut as a 20 year old on 16 December 2004 against England at Port Elizabeth. He made an impression opening the batting, but was dropped down the order for the second test and also handed the wicket-keeping gloves. In this match, he made a match saving half century from number seven. However, he found himself at the top of the order again for the final test of the series and has played the majority of his tests there. Since then he has not missed a Test match and has also batted down the order in some tests leading to speculation that he may possibly take the place of Mark Boucher as the wicket-keeper/batsman when Boucher retires. Despite a good tour of the Caribbean where he scored 178 to seal the series, his rapid progress was halted on the tour of Australia in 2005. Despite playing Shane Warne well, he struggled and made just 152 runs in 6 innings. de Villiers holds the record for scoring most Test runs before getting out for a duck. He is used in a similar fashion to Jonty Rhodes in ODIs. He opens the batting in and the 2005 ODI tour to India represented a 'coming of age' for de Villiers as a cricketer as he scored his second ODI 50 24 October, 2006 batting 5th in a partnership with Mark Boucher, playing against an impressive Sri Lankan side. De Villiers gave the selectors a sign by producing his then highest one-day score of 92 not out including 12 fours and one six from 98 balls against India in the 2006 winter series. De Villiers has a reputation as an outstanding fielder, typified by a sensational diving run-out of Simon Katich of Australia in 2005. This has also led people to further comparisons of him to Jonty Rhodes as he was also one of the finest fielders of his generation.

Jacques Henry Kallis

Jacques Henry Kallis Biography
Jacques Henry Kallis was born on 16 October 1975 in Pinelands, Cape Town, South Africa, is a South African cricketer. As an all-rounder he is a formidable right-handed batsman and fast-medium swingbowler. He is the only cricketer in the history of the game to hold more than 10,000 runs and 250 wickets in both one day and Test match cricket.

Kallis attended and played cricket for Wynberg Boys’ High School. In 2009, Wynberg honoured Kallis by naming their main cricket oval after him. As a teenager, Kallis had a brief spell with Netherfield CC in England where he established himself in Northern England but he was released. Kallis also played for Old Edwardians for a spell as a teenager, where coaching staff saw potential for him to become a first-class all rounder; later in his first season he was picked for South Africa U-21′s as a 12th man.

He made his first-class debut in 1993/94 as an 18-year-old, playing for Western Province. His first Test appearance was in December 1995 against England at Durban, but he struggled with the bat in his first few matches. His breakthrough came in 1997 with 61 against Pakistan, but more notably two matches later when he salvaged a draw for South Africa with a fighting century against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

From October-December 2007 he produced a streak of five centuries in four Test Matches; he has 34 in total. He was named Leading Cricketer in the World in the 2008 Wisden for his performances in 2007 in addition to being the “ICC Test Player of the Year” and ICC Player of the Year in 2005. He has been described by Kevin Pietersen and Daryll Cullinan as the greatest cricketer to play the game.

The Jacques Kallis Scholarship Foundation was established in Kallis’ benefit year with the aim of combining the academic and life skills programmes of existing school structures with funding and mentoring support from Jacques Kallis. In so doing, the Foundation with its partners, hopes to provide talented youngsters from all walks of life the opportunity to reach their full sporting and academic potential.

Currently, the Jacques Kallis Scholarship Foundation sponsors 2 boys from Pretoria Boys High School, 2 from Maritzburg College and 2 from Selborne College. Jacques Kallis partakes in annual fundraising events for his Foundation, to which he invites fellow South African celebrities and cricketers like Mark Boucher and Andre Nel.

Graeme Smith

Graeme Smith Biography
Graeme Craig Smith (born 1 February 1981 in Johannesburg) is a South African cricketer, and the current captain of the South African cricket team, having succeeded Shaun Pollock after the 2003 Cricket World Cup. A tall, left-handed opening batsman, on the 2003 South African tour of England he made double centuries in consecutive Test matches: 277 at Edgbaston, and 259 at Lord's. The 277 is the highest individual innings ever made for South Africa, and the 259 is the highest score ever made at Lord's by a foreign player. Known for the success of his opening partnership with Herschelle Gibbs, South Africa's most prolific ever opening partnership, Smith has the distinction of having been part of all four of South Africa's opening partnerships of over 300 runs: in three of them he was partnered by Gibbs, and in 2008 Smith added 415 for the first wicket with Neil McKenzie against Bangladesh, a world record opening partnership. Smith made his Test debut for South Africa in 2002 in Cape Town against Australia, batting at number three and scoring 68 in the second innings. Promoted to open the batting with Herschelle Gibbs against Bangladesh in his third Test match, Smith scored 200. In the following home series against Pakistan, Smith (who scored 151) and Gibbs (228) shared a first-wicket stand of 368, a national record until bettered by Smith and Neil McKenzie's 415, and at the time the fourth highest opening partnership in Test history. Following the 2003 Cricket World Cup and Shaun Pollock's subsequent resignation, Smith was selected as captain for South Africa's next Test. The decision was criticised as it was felt that he had shown 'few leadership credentials': he had played only eight Test matches and 22 ODIs before being given the captaincy. Graeme Smithwas only 22 years and 82 days old when he captained his first match against Bangladesh, the youngest ever South African captain. During the tour of England in 2003 he made double centuries in consecutive test matches: 277 (and 85 from 70 balls in the second innings) in the first Test at Edgbaston, and 259 in an innings victory in the second Test at Lord's. His 277 remains the highest individual Test innings scored by a South African, surpassing the previous record of 275 held jointly by Darryl Cullinan and Gary Kirsten; his 259 remains the highest score made at Lord's by a foreign player, breaking the record of 254 set by Sir Donald Bradman in 1930. These performances prompted Alec Stewart to call him \"the most impressive 22-year-old I have seen in cricket\"; the Edgbaston match prompted Nasser Hussain to retire as captain of England, to be succeeded by Michael Vaughan. This outstanding run of form could have continued but for an unusual dismissal: in the third Test at Trent Bridge Smith, on 35, played back to Andrew Flintoff and trod on his stumps to be dismissed hit wicket. Smith did not pass 20 again in the series as a galvanised England led by Vaughan won the match and fought back to draw the series 22, but Smith nonetheless finished the series with an aggregate of 714 runs at an average of 79.33, and was named player of the series (jointly with Flintoff). During the year 2004 South Africa had a significantly less successful run in ODI cricket than they would have expected, with a 51 series loss to New Zealand and a 50 series loss to Sri Lanka. They had beaten the West Indies 31 earlier in the year, but South African cricket was described as being in a state of 'freefall'. In Test matches also South Africa suffered a poor run with series losses to England, India and Sri Lanka. They did nevertheless win a home Test series against the West Indies (with Smith and Gibbs sharing their third 300-run opening partnership). Although initially regarded as an inexperienced captain, his growth in the role was evidenced when he was selected to captain the ICC World XI in the ICC Super Series Test Match between the ICC World XI and Australia in October 2005.

As the whole of India frets and fumes over the disappointment of failing to guard the “Final Frontiers” of the Aussies, there is a small Indian community in Durban which is rejoicing over the selection of their son of Indian decent, Hashim Mohamed Amla for the South African team on its upcoming tour to India. With the South African team reaching the depth of failure after its dismal recent performances, the selectors have turned to the youth in an attempt to resolve the future of South African cricket. And Hashim one can say is a beneficiary of such a youth oriented direction the Proteas are taking. His selection is a great tribute to the growing influence of Asians (people of Indian origin) in South African cricket.

Cricket was always in his family, and with a rich vein of Indian blood flowing within him, cricket soon became his passion. Just two seasons after his elder brother Ahmed Amla made his debut for Kwazulu-Natal (now Dolphins), Hashim followed suit. He made his debut against the visiting England XI for Kwazulu-Natal at Durban at the age of 18. His debut could well be a forgettable one as he just made a single run in his short stay on the crease and it seemed as though his career at Natal will be short-stayed. He but played in the Durban & Districts league and for South Africa Under-19s and scored heavily for his club for 2 successive years before making a comeback of sorts into the Natal team. And since the he has never looked back. He recorded an aggregate of 816 runs in his comeback season at a good average of 51.The 2001/02 season gave his career a perfect jumpstart, which was one of the reasons as to where he is today. Hashim’s consistent and prolific run scoring in the seasons to follow was good enough to book him a spot in the South Africa A line up, which played Zimbabwe in2003/04 and later New Zealand A at home. He is in phenomenal form this season with an unfinished aggregate of 641 runs in 6 games with centuries against New Zealand A and the provincial teams. One gets a feeling that the fans of South African cricket will expect Hashim to carry this prolific scoring and consistency on his cricket kit-bag to India for the upcoming tour.
